How to add mixed numbers with like denominators?

There are two common methods that can be used to add mixed numbers with like denominators. You may find method 1 easier especially for bigger numbers.

Method 1: Add the whole numbers and fractions separately
Step 1: Add the whole numbers together.
Step 2: Add the fractions together. To do this, add the numerators together and keep the same denominator.
Step 3: If the sum of the fractions is an improper fraction, simplify it to a mixed number.
Step 4: Add the result from step 1 to the result from step 3 to get the final answer.

Method 2: Add the mixed numbers as improper fractions.
Step 1: Convert each of the mixed numbers into improper fractions.
Step 2: The denominator of the improper fractions should be the same. Add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
Step 3: Simplify the resulting improper fraction to a mixed number.

Example:
Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions: 2 1/5 = 11/5 and 1 3/5 = 8/5.
Add the numerators and keep the denominator the same: 11/5 + 8/5 = 19/5.
Write the sum as a mixed number: 19/5 = 3 4/5
