How to Add & Subtract Complex Numbers?

There are two sets of add & subtract complex number worksheets.

Adding and subtracting complex numbers involves combining their real and imaginary parts separately. Complex numbers are in the form a+bi, where a is the real part and b is the imaginary part. Here’s how to add and subtract complex numbers:

Adding Complex Numbers:

To add two complex numbers a₁ + b₁i and a₂ + b₂, follow these steps:

1. Add the real parts together:
   a₁ + a₂
2. Add the imaginary parts together:
   b₁ + b₂
3. Combine the results to form the sum of the complex numbers: a₁ + a₂ + (b₁ + b₂)i

Example:
Add 3 + 2i and 1 - 5i
Real parts: 3 + 1 = 4
Imaginary parts: 2 - 5 = -3

3 + 2i + 1 - 5i = 4 - 3i

Subtracting Complex Numbers:

To subtract two complex numbers a₁ + b₁i and a₂ + b₂, follow these steps:

1. Subtract the real part of the second complex number from the real part of the first complex number:
   a₁ - a₂
2. Subtract the imaginary part of the second complex number from the imaginary part of the first complex number: b₁ - b₂
3. Combine the results to form the difference of the complex numbers: a₁ - a₂ + (b₁ - b₂)i

Example:
Subtract 3 + 2i from 1 - 5i
Real parts: 1 - 3 = -2
Imaginary parts: -5 - 2 = -7

1 - 5i - (3 + 2i) = -2 - 7i
