Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Geometry students learn how to find angles with parallel lines crossed by a transversal: identify and apply corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, and same-side interior angles.

How to find angles with parallel lines crossed by a transversal?

When a transversal intersects two or more lines, it creates various types of angles that have unique relationships with each other. Here’s an overview of the key concepts.

Key Terms

  1. Transversal: A line that crosses at least two other lines.
  2. Parallel Lines: Lines that never intersect and are equidistant from each other.

When a transversal crosses two parallel lines, it creates several types of angle pairs with special relationships.

Types of Angles Formed by a Transversal

  1. Corresponding Angles:
These angles are on the same side of the transversal and in the same relative position at each intersection.
If the lines are parallel, corresponding angles are equal.
  2. Alternate Interior Angles:
These angles are on opposite sides of the transversal and between the two lines.
If the lines are parallel, alternate interior angles are equal.
  3. Alternate Exterior Angles:
These angles are on opposite sides of the transversal and outside the two lines.
If the lines are parallel, alternate exterior angles are equal.
  4. Consecutive (Same-Side) Interior Angles:
These angles are on the same side of the transversal and between the two lines.
If the lines are parallel, consecutive interior angles are supplementary (sum to 180°).

The following diagram shows some examples of angles an how to state a reason in an exercise or proof.
