Learning ch words can be fun and effective when we use a variety of methods to engage students. Help the students become familiar with ch words (like “chair,” “chicken,” “chocolate,” etc.):

  1. Introduce the “Ch” Sound
    Phonemic Awareness: Begin by teaching the sound of the ch digraph. The ch makes a /tʃ/ sound, as in “chair” or “chicken."
    Say the sound slowly and clearly: /ch/.
    Emphasize the ch sound by saying it loudly and slowly and having the students repeat it after you.

  2. Practice Pronunciation: Have the students say these words out loud, focusing on the correct pronunciation of the ch sound at the beginning.
