Learning the “Cr” Blend
The “cr” blend is formed by combining the consonant sounds of “c” and “r”:
“c” sound: /k/ (as in “cat”)
“r” sound: /r/ (as in “run”)
When these sounds are blended, they create the /kr/ sound. Try saying it slowly: /k/-/r/-/kr/. You should be able to distinguish both the /k/ and /r/ sounds.

Here are some common words that begin with the “cr” blend:
crack, crash, crush, creep, crunch, crab, craft, crate, crown, crayon

Tips for Practicing the “cr” Blend:

  • Isolate the sounds: Practice saying the /k/ and /r/ sounds separately, then blend them smoothly together.
  • Read aloud: Practice reading words containing the “cr” blend. Pay attention to how the sounds flow together.
  • Write the words: Writing “cr” words can help reinforce the spelling and the blended sound.
  • Use flashcards: Create flashcards with “cr” words and practice reading them quickly.
  • Listen carefully: Listen to videos and songs teaching the “cr” words.
