Discrete Functions
A discrete function is a function whose domain is a set of discrete values, such as integers or whole numbers. In other words, the input values are separate and distinct, with no continuous values between them.
Examples:
The number of students in a class as a function of the year.
The price of a postage stamp as a function of its weight.
The population of a city as a function of the year.
Non-Discrete Functions
A non-discrete function, also known as a continuous function, has a domain that includes all real numbers within a certain interval. This means that the input values can be any real number, not just whole numbers.
Examples:
The height of a ball thrown into the air as a function of time.
The temperature as a function of time.
The distance traveled as a function of time at a constant speed.
Key Differences:
Domain: Discrete functions have a domain of discrete values, while non-discrete functions have a domain of continuous values.
Graph: The graph of a discrete function consists of individual points, while the graph of a non-discrete function is a continuous curve or line.
