How to divide by multiples of 10?
Dividing by multiples of 10 can be made simpler by “canceling” the same number of zeros from both the dividend and the divisor. The zeros to be canceled must be at the end of the numbers.
Here’s an example to illustrate the process:
Divide 4,800 by 20.
Step 1:
The divisor is 20, which has one zero.
The dividend is 4,800 which has two zeros.
Step 2:
Cancel one zero from 20 to get 2 and cancel one zero from 4,800 to get 480
Step 3:
Perform the division:
480 ÷ 2 = 240
So, 4,800 ÷ 20 = 240.
Using this strategy of canceling zeros can simplify the division process when dividing by multiples of 10, making it quicker and easier to obtain the quotient. Remember to always double-check your results for accuracy.
Knowing how to divide by multiples of 10 is useful in many situations, as it can help you quickly calculate the result of a division without the need for a calculator.
