Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 7 and Grade 8 learn how to write the equation of a line given two points or the slope and a point on the line.
To find the equation of a line given two points, you can use the point-slope form or the slope-intercept form.
Point-Slope Form:
Example:
Given the points (2, 3) and (5, 9), find the equation of the line.
Find the slope: m = (9 - 3) / (5 - 2) = 2
Choose the point (2, 3)
Substitute into point-slope form: y - 3 = 2(x - 2)
Rewrite as slope-intercept form: y = 2x -1
Slope-Intercept Form:
Example:
Using the same points as before, (2, 3) and (5, 9):
Find the slope: m = 2
Substitute one point and the slope: 3 = 2(2) + b
Solve for b: 3 = 4 + b, b = -1
Write the equation: y = 2x - 1
In conclusion:
