When working with measurements, the greatest possible error (GPE) helps determine the range within which the true value lies. The minimum possible value and maximum possible value can be calculated by subtracting and adding the GPE to the measured value, respectively.

Check out this lesson on how to find the greatest possible error.

Steps to Find Minimum and Maximum Values

  1. Calculate the GPE:
    Use the formula:
GPE = 1/2 × smallest unit of measurement
  2. Find the Minimum Value:
Subtract the GPE from the measured value:
Minimum Value = Measured Value − GPE.
  3. Find the Maximum Value:
Add the GPE to the measured value:
Maximum Value = Measured Value + GPE.

Examples:

  1. You measure your brother and record his height as 49in. What is your greatest possible error?
  2. You weigh a bunch of bananas at the grocery store. The scale reads 18.7oz. What is your greatest possible error?
