Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 1 students learn the fact family for addition and subtraction.
There are two sets of Fact Family (addition, subtraction) worksheets.
An addition-subtraction fact family, often referred to as a number family or fact family, consists of a set of related mathematical equations involving addition and subtraction operations. These equations share a common set of numbers and follow a specific pattern. Understanding these fact families can help students develop strong number sense and improve their math skills.
Here’s an example of an addition-subtraction fact family based on the numbers 3, 5, and 8:
Number Family: 3, 5, 8
Addition Facts:
3 + 5 = 8
5 + 3 = 8
Subtraction Facts:
8 - 3 = 5
8 - 5 = 3
In this fact family, you have two addition facts and two subtraction facts. The key concept here is that you can use these four related equations to understand the relationships between these three numbers.
For example, if you know that 3 + 5 = 8, you can also deduce that 8 - 5 = 3, 8 - 3 = 5, and 5 + 3 = 8. This helps students see how addition and subtraction are interconnected and reinforces their understanding of number relationships.
