This is for SAT in Jan 2016 or before.
The following are worked solutions for the questions in the math sections of the SAT Practice Tests found in the The Official SAT Study Guide Second Edition.
It would be best that you go through the SAT practice test questions in the Study Guide first and then look at the worked solutions for the questions that you might need assistance in. 1. Correct answer: (A)
Given:
s + t = 3
To find:
s + t – 6
Solution:
Topic(s): Substitution
s + t – 6 = 3 – 6 = – 3
Answer: (A) – 3
2. Correct answer: (C)
Given:
The figure of a cube
To find:
The point whose distance is from P is different from its distance from Q
Solution:
C is nearer to Q then to P. This is because PQ is the diagonal of a right triangle whose sides are the same length as CQ.
Answer: (C) C
3. Correct answer: (D)
Given:
The bar graph
To find:
The circle graph that displays the same data as the bar graph
Solution:
We need to estimate how much of the circle would be taken by each category.
Web sites take up 78%.
Web sites should take up more than of the circle. This eliminates (A) and (B).
News Groups take up 2% but that is not shown in (C). This eliminates (C).
In (E), E-mail is shown to be only about twice the size of News Groups when it should be about 18 ÷ 2 = 9 times bigger. This eliminates (E).
So, the most correct graph is (D)
Answer: (D)
4. Correct answer: (D)
Given:
The numerator of a certain fraction is 5 less than the denominator
The fraction =
To find:
The denominator of the fraction
Solution:
Topic(s): Fractions
Let x = denominator
x – 5 = numerator
Cross multiply
4(x – 5) = 3x ⇒ 4x – 20 = 3x ⇒ x = 20
Answer: (D) 20
5. Correct answer: (E)
Given:
The figure (be careful about the scale)
Area of triangle ABC is 18
To find:
The value of k
Solution:
Topic(s): Area of triangle
From the figure, we get b = 3k, h = 4
Answer: (E) 3
