Learning the Consonant blend “GR”

A consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but each sound may be heard in the blend. When pronouncing words with the “gr” combination, you say both the “g” and the “r” clearly in quick succession, without a pause.

The “gr” blend is made up of the consonants “g” and “r”:
“g” sound: /ɡ/ (as in “go”)
“r” sound: /r/ (as in “run”)
When you put them together, you get the blended sound /ɡr/. Try saying it slowly: /ɡ/-/r/-/ɡr/. You should be able to hear both the /ɡ/ and /r/ sounds.

Helpful Tips for Practicing the “gr” Sound:

1. Slow Down: If you’re not used to making the “gr” sound together, practice saying the sounds separately (g…r…) and then combine them.
2. Repetition: Repeating words like “green”, “great”, and “grow” will help you master the flow of the sound.
3. Listen and Imitate: Listening to videos of native speakers and mimicking their pronunciation will also help with mastering the “gr” sound.
