How to increase a number by a percentage?

There are 3 sets of increase a number by a percentage worksheets:

• Easy or Simple Percents (50%, 25%, 20%, 10%, 5%, 1%)
• Whole Number Percents
• Decimal Number Percents

Method 1: Using the formula In general, the formula for increasing a number by a percentage can be expressed as:
Increased Value = Original Number + (Original Number × Percentage Decimal)

1. Convert the percent to a decimal by dividing it by 100.
2. Multiply the original number by the decimal obtained in Step 1. This will give you the amount to increase the number by.
3. Add the amount from Step 2 to the original number to get the increased value.

Example: Increase 80 by 25%.

1. Convert 25% to a decimal: 25/100 = 0.25
2. Multiply 80 by 0.25: 80 × 0.25 = 20
3. Add the result from Step 2 to the original number: 80 + 20 = 100
   Therefore, increasing 80 by 25% results in 100.

Method 2: Using a Multiplier The formula for increasing a number by a percentage using a multiplier can be expressed as:
Increased Value = Original Number × (1 + Percentage Decimal)

1. Convert the percent to a decimal by dividing it by 100.
2. Add 1 to the decimal obtained in Step 1.
3. Multiply the original number by the result from Step 2 to get the increased value.

Example: Increase 80 by 25%.

1. Convert 25% to a decimal: 25/100 = 0.25
2. Add 1 to the decimal: 0.25 + 1 = 1.25
3. Multiply 80 by 1.25: 80 × 1.25 = 100 Therefore, increasing 80 by 25% results in 100.

Using this multiplier approach can provide a quick and efficient way to calculate the increased value of a number by a certain percentage. We can do step 2 in the head and use a calculator for step 3 if necessary.
