Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 6 students review how to find the median of a data set. Find the value of the median for data sets with an odd number of observations and for data sets with an even number of observations.
The median is a measure of central tendency that represents the middle value in a dataset when the data points are arranged in ascending or descending order. If the dataset has an odd number of observations, the median is the middle value. If the dataset has an even number of observations, the median is the average of the two middle values.
Interpretation of the Median
Central Value:
The median represents the central value of a dataset. Half of the data points are below the median, and half are above it. This makes it a useful measure of the center of the data, especially for skewed distributions.
Robustness to Outliers:
The median is less affected by outliers and extreme values compared to the mean. This makes it a more reliable measure of central tendency when the dataset contains outliers or is not symmetrically distributed.
Distribution Insights:
Symmetrical Distribution: For a symmetric distribution, the mean and median will be approximately equal.
Skewed Distribution:
If the data is skewed to the right (positive skew), the median will be less than the mean.
If the data is skewed to the left (negative skew), the median will be greater than the mean.
