Learning the “L” Sound
The letter L makes the /l/ sound, which is a soft, liquid consonant sound. This sound is heard in words like lion and lake. It’s created by lightly touching the tongue to the roof of the mouth just behind the teeth.

Spelling Patterns for the /l/ Sound

  1. Single L:
    L is the most common way to represent the /l/ sound, and it can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.
    Examples: lion, elephant, cool
  2. Double L (LL)
    LL often appears in the middle or at the end of words. It’s common after a short vowel sound
    Examples: jelly, balloon, bell, wall
  3. LE:
    Examples: table, apple.
  4. AL:
    Examples: animal, festival, general
  5. EL:
    Examples: camel, travel, level
