Length Word Problems (1st Grade)
Word problems about lengths of two different objects measured in centimeters (suitable for first grade).
Example:
Emma has a ribbon that is 12 centimeters long. She cuts it into two pieces. The first piece is 5 centimeters long, and the second piece is the remaining length. How long is the second piece of ribbon?
Solution:
To find the length of the second piece, we can subtract the length of the first piece from the original length.
Original length - Length of the first piece = Length of the second piece
12 centimeters − 5 centimeters = 7 centimeters
So, the second piece of ribbon is 7 centimeters long.
This word problem introduces the concept of finding an unknown length by subtracting the known length from the total length. It provides a practical context for understanding subtraction in relation to lengths.
