Learning the upper case letter E and lower case letter e can be a enjoyable experience for preschoolers when approached with fun and hands-on activities.

  1. Introduce the Letter
    What the letters look like?
    The uppercase E looks like a tall straight line with three shorter lines coming out to the right: one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom. Think of it as a comb or a fork turned sideways!
    The lowercase e looks like a small loop. It starts with a straight line that curves around to form a small tail

  3. Phonics and Sounds
    The letter E makes two sounds: short /ĕ/ like in egg and elephant, and long /ē/ like in eagle and ear.
    Examples:
    Short E Words (/ĕ/): egg, elephant, engine, elbow, envelope.
    Learn about the short e
    Long E Words (/ē/): eagle, ear, eel, evening.

  4. Hands-On Activities
    Use popsicle sticks to form uppercase E.
    Cut out a large letter E and let children decorate it with drawings, glitter, or stickers.

  5. Music and Movement Sing a Song:
    Example: “E is for egg, /ĕ/, /ĕ/, egg…”
    Letter E Movement:
    Pretend to be elephants stomping around while saying the short E sound (/ĕ/).

  6. Listen and Read
    Storytime:
    Listen and read books featuring the letter E.



    Picture Cards:
    Show cards with images of items starting with E and have kids say the name.

  7. Reinforce Daily
    Use the letter E throughout the day:
    Say, “Let’s crack an egg for breakfast. That starts with E!”
    Point out the letter E in books, signs, and everyday objects.

  8. Learn the other letters of the alphabet.
