How to write linear and nonlinear expressions?

Writing Linear and Nonlinear Expressions from Mathematical Statements

Understanding the Key Terms:
Linear Expression: Contains only variables raised to the power of 1.
Nonlinear Expression: Contains variables raised to powers other than 1.

Steps to Write Expressions:

  1. Identify the Variables: Determine which quantities in the statement are unknown and represent them with variables (e.g., x, y, z).
  2. Translate the Operations: Convert the words into mathematical symbols:
  • “Sum” or “added to”: +
  • “Difference” or “subtracted from”: -
  • “Product” or “multiplied by”: ×
