Learning the Long “O” Sound
The long “O” sound (/oʊ/) occurs when the vowel “O” says its name, as in the word boat.

Common Spelling Patterns for Long “O”
O_E: Silent “E” at the end of a word makes the “O” long.
Examples: bone, home, nose, cone, stove

OA: Found in the middle of a word.
Examples: boat, coat, road, soap, toad

OW: Found at the end of a word or syllable.
Examples: snow, grow, throw, flow, show

O (Open Syllable): The “O” is long when it appears at the end of an open syllable.
Examples: go, no, open, oval, robot

OE: Found at the end of some words.
Examples: toe, hoe, foe

Long Vowel O
When we see two Vowels next to each other, the first Vowel is a Long Vowel that makes the sound of its Letter Name and the second Vowel is silent.
An example of this letter pattern with Long Vowel O is the word “Oat.” The O makes the sound of its Letter Name “O,” the A does not make any sound, and the Consonant T makes its typical sound.
