Missing Number in Subtraction Worksheets

Finding the missing minuend or subtrahend in a subtraction problem involves identifying the unknown quantity in an equation. Here are the general steps to find the missing minuend or subtrahend:

Example 1: Finding the Missing Minuend
Problem:
? - 5 = 8
What number, when subtracted by 5, equals 8?
Add the subtrahend (5) to the result (8) to find the missing minuend.
5 + 8 = 13
The missing minuend is 13, so the completed equation is
13 − 5 = 8.

Example 2: Finding the Missing Subtrahend
Problem: 9 - ? = 4
What number, when subtracted from 9, equals 4?
Subtract the result (4) from the minuend (9) to find the missing subtrahend.
9 − 4 = 5
The missing subtrahend is 5, so the completed equation is
9 − 5 = 4.
