Learning Oi and Oy Sounds
The “oi” and “oy” sounds represent a diphthong that glides from /ɔ/ to /ɪ/, as heard in words like coin and boy. These are typically spelled using the vowel combinations “oi” and “oy”. A diphthong is a sound made by gliding from one vowel sound to another within the same syllable. It’s essentially two vowel sounds blended together.
Spelling Rules:
There’s a very helpful spelling rule for “oi” and “oy”:
Use “oi” in the middle of a word or at the beginning of a word.
Use “oy” at the end of a word.
Examples:
oi: boil, coin, foil, join, joint, moist, oil, ointment, point, poison, soil, spoil, voice, void
oy: boy, buoy, coy, destroy, employ, enjoy, joy, ploy, soy, toy
The Exception:
The only common exception to this rule is the word “oyster."
