The “oo” sound in English can represent two different vowel sounds, commonly known as the long “oo” sound and the short “oo” sound. The long “oo” sound is generally more common than the short “oo” sound.

  1. Short “oo” Sound (/ʊ/)
    The short “oo” sound is usually heard in shorter words and can sound abrupt like the sound in “put”.
    Examples: book, look, hook, foot, cook.
  2. Long “oo” Sound (/uː/)
    The long “oo” sound is smooth and extended, like the sound in “blue."
    Examples: moon, food, school, tooth, room, zoo, too
