Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 3 students learn how to use the order of operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and parenthesis.
In grade 3, students are introduced to the concept of the order of operations. We will start with expressions that have addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Parenthesis are then included.
Here’s a simplified order of operations for grade 3:
The main focus at this level is on understanding the basic arithmetic operations and developing fluency in performing calculations. Division and exponents will be introduced in grade 4 and grade 5. (check the above links)
Example:
Expression: 4 + 3 × 2 - 5
Perform multiplication first: 3 × 2 = 6
Perform addition and subtraction from left to right:
4 + 6 = 10
10 - 5 = 5
Therefore, 4 + 3 × 2 - 5 = 5.
We can write the evaluation like this:
4 + 3 × 2 - 5
= 4 + 6 - 5
= 10 - 5
= 5
Example:
Expression: 4 + 3 × (5 - 2)
Perform calculations in the parenthesis: 5 - 2 = 3
Perform multiplication next: 3 × 3 = 9
Perform addition and subtraction from left to right:
4 + 9 = 13
Therefore, 4 + 3 × (5 - 2) = 13.
We can write the evaluation like this:
4 + 3 × (5 - 2)
= 4 + 3 × 3
= 4 + 9
= 13
