How to perform order of operation (PEMDAS) with integers?

There are three sets of order of operation with integers worksheets:

  • Order of Operations (+, -, ×, ÷)
  • Order of Operations (+, -, ×, ÷, parenthesis)
  • Order of Operations (+, -, ×, ÷, parenthesis, exponents)

The order of operations, often referred to as PEMDAS or BODMAS, is a rule that helps determine the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed to evaluate an expression involving integers.

This is the order to evaluate an expression (PEMDAS rule):

  • Parentheses: Perform operations within parentheses first. If there are nested parentheses, start from the innermost and work your way outwards. Be careful not confuse this with the parentheses that are used for negative integers.
  • Exponents: Evaluate any exponents or powers next. Raise the base to the given exponent.
  • Multiplication and Division: Perform multiplication and division from left to right. If there are multiple multiplication or division operations, evaluate them in the order they appear.
  • Addition and Subtraction: Finally, perform addition and subtraction from left to right. Evaluate them in the order they appear.
PEMDAS

Example: Evaluate (-3) × (-10) + (-48) ÷ (-4)

  1. Since there are no parentheses or exponents, we will perform the multiplication first:
    (-3) × (-10) = 30
  2. Next, we will perform the division:
    (-48) ÷ (-4) = 12
  3. Then, perform the addition: 30 + 12 = 42
We can write the evaluation like this
    (-3) × (-10) + (-48) ÷ (-4)
    = 30 + (-48) ÷ (-4)
    = 30 + 12
    = 42

Example: (-10) - ((-16) ÷ (-8))3 × (-3)

  1. Perform the operation in the parenthesis:
    ((-16) ÷ (-8)) = 2
  2. Perform the exponent 23 = 8
  3. Perform the multiplication 8 × (-3) = -24
  4. Perform the subtraction: (-10) - (-24) = 14
We can write the evaluation like this
    (-10) - ((-16) ÷ (-8))3 × (-3) = (-10) - 23 × (-3)
    = (-10) - 8 × (-3)
    = (-10) - (-24)
    = 14
