Learning the “R” Sound
The R sound (/r/) is one of the most distinct and versatile sounds in English. It is a voiced consonant, meaning the vocal cords vibrate when making the sound. The /r/ sound can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of words and is represented by the letter R.

Common Words with the /r/ Sound
At the Beginning of Words
red, run, rat, rain, ring, road, rope, rock, room, rabbit
In the Middle of Words
carry, barrel, carrot, marry, spirit, parent, berry, around

  1. R Alone
    Common in words like red, rain, room, rock.
  2. R Blends
    Br: bring, bright, brown
    Cr: crab, crown, cry
    Dr: drum, dry, drive
    Fr: frog, fruit, free
    Gr: grass, green, grow
    Pr: print, pride, promise
    Tr: tree, truck, train
  3. Vowel + R (R-Controlled Vowels)
    The R changes the sound of the preceding vowel.
    ar: car, star, far
    er: her, serve, paper
    ir: bird, first, shirt
    or: for, store, more
    ur: fur, burn, curl
  4. Silent R (British English)
    In non-rhotic accents like British English, R is often silent when it follows a vowel and isn’t followed by another vowel.
