Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 6 students learn about how to use tape diagrams to solve ratio word problems. Solve ratio word problems when given a ratio between two quantities and a change to those quantities that changes the ratio. The total number of items remains the same but there is a change in the distribution which changes the ratio.
Tape diagrams are a valuable tool for solving ratio problems, when the number of items remain the same but the ratio changes.
Read the problem carefully. Take note of the initial ratio, the second ratio and the value of one of the parts.
Draw two rectangles to represent the two parts of the initial ratio.
Divide each rectangle into a number of sections that reflects the given ratio.
Draw another two rectangles to represent the second ratio and divide the each rectangle into a number of sections that reflects the given ratio.
Use the given value of one of the parts to find the number of items represented by each of the section.
Find the quantities represented by each rectangle by multiplying by the number of sections.
