Learning the “S” Sound
The S sound (/s/) is a common consonant sound in English. It is unvoiced, meaning the vocal cords do not vibrate when producing it. The /s/ sound can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of words and is often associated with the hissing sound of air passing through the teeth.

Spelling Patterns for the /s/ Sound
- S as S
Examples: sit, pass, sister, messy - C as S (Soft C)
When C is followed by E, I, or Y, it usually makes the /s/ sound.
Examples: city, rice, face, pencil, cycle - SS for Emphasis
Double S often appears in the middle or end of words for a strong /s/ sound.
