Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 7 and Grade 8 learn how to show that the slope of a line joining any two distinct points of the graph of y=mx+b has slope m. Transform the standard form of an equation into slope-intercept form. We can use the slope-intercept form to graph the line.
To find the slope of a line from its equation, you usually want to express the equation in slope-intercept form. The slope-intercept form of a line is:
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏
Where:
𝑚 is the slope of the line
𝑏 is the y-intercept (the point where the line crosses the y-axis)
If the equation is not in slope-intercept form, you can rearrange it to put it into this form.
For example, the equation 3x - 4y = 12 can be rearrange in the following steps:
-4y = -3x + 12
y = 3/4 x - 3
The slope is the coefficient of x which is 3/4.
Vertical line: The equation of a vertical line looks like 𝑥 = 𝑎, where 𝑎 is a constant. Vertical lines have undefined slopes.
Horizontal line: The equation of a horizontal line looks like 𝑦 = 𝑏, where 𝑏 is a constant. Horizontal lines have a slope of 0.
