Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 8 students learn how to calculate the standard deviation for a set of data. The standard deviation is interpreted as a typical distance from the mean.

How to calculate Standard Deviation?

Standard deviation is a statistical measure that tells us how spread out a set of data is. A low standard deviation means the data points tend to be close to the mean, while a high standard deviation indicates that the data points are spread out over a wider range.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to calculate standard deviation:

  1. Calculate the mean:
Add up all the data points.
Divide the sum by the number of data points.
  2. Calculate the deviation of each data point from the mean:
Subtract the mean from each data point.
  3. Square each deviation:
Square each deviation calculated in step 2.
  4. Calculate the variance:
Add up all the squared deviations.
Divide the sum by the number of data points minus 1 (for sample standard deviation) or by the number of data points (for population standard deviation).
  5. Calculate the standard deviation:
Take the square root of the variance.
