When subtracting 7,8, or 9 from a teen number (a number between 10 and 19), you can use the following method.
Let’s look at some examples:
Examples:
Subtract 7 from 19:
19 - 7 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 7 = 3
9 + 3 = 12
So, 19 − 7 = 12
Subtract 8 from 17:
17 - 8 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 8 = 2
7 + 2 = 9
So, 17 − 8 = 9
Subtract 8 from 11:
11 - 8 can be done in 2 steps
10 - 8 = 2
1 + 2 = 3
So, 11 − 8 = 3
After some practice, the student may recognize the pattern of adding 3 when subtracting 7, adding 2 when subtracting 8 and adding 1 when subtracting 9. This approach is particularly useful for mental math, and it helps students develop their understanding of numbers and basic subtraction concepts.
