Subtract Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators & Regrouping Worksheet

Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 5 students practice subtracting mixed mixed numbers.

How to subtract mixed numbers with like denominators & regrouping?

Step 1: Subtract the fractions.
Check that the denominators of the fractions are the same.
If the numerator of the first fraction is less than the numerator of the second fraction then regrouping is necessary for the first fraction.
Subtract (or borrow) 1 from the whole number portion of the first fraction.
Convert the 1 into an equivalent fraction with the same denominator as the given fraction.
Add the equivalent fraction to the first fraction.
Now subtract the two fractions.
Step 2: Subtract the whole numbers.
Step 3: Add the results from step 1 and step 2 to get the final answer.

For example:
5 4/7 - 2 6/7
Step 1: Subtract the fractions.
Since the fractions have the same denominator and the first numerator is less than the second, regrouping of the first fraction is needed.
Subtract 1 from 5.
Convert the 1 to 7/7.
Add to the first fraction: 7/7 + 4/7 = 11/7
Subtract the fractions: 11/7 - 6/7 = 5/7 Step 2: Subtract the whole numbers.
4 - 2 = 2
Step 3: The answer is then 2 5/7.
