Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help grade 5 learn how to find the surface area of a rectangular prism.
To find the surface area of a rectangular prism, you need to calculate the areas of its six faces and then add them together. The formula for the surface area of a rectangular prism is:
Surface Area (SA) = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh
Where:
Here’s a step-by-step guide to finding the surface area of a rectangular prism:
Example:
Find the surface area of a rectangular prism with the following dimensions:
Length (l) = 4 units
Width (w) = 3 units
Height (h) = 5 units
Using the formula:
SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh
SA = 2(4)(3) + 2(4)(5) + 2(3)(5)
Now calculate each term:
2lw = 2(4)(3) = 24 square units
2lh = 2(4)(5) = 40 square units
2wh = 2(3)(5) = 30 square units
Now, add these areas together:
SA = 24 + 40 + 30
SA = 94 square units
So, the surface area of the rectangular prism is 94 square units.
